From the seeds or pits of the argan tree (Lat. Argania spinosa), Morocco’s liquid gold, the argan oil, is extracted. Ripe fruits, which fall from the argan tree are gathered by locals and dried on the roofs of their houses. The dried fruit flesh over the argan nut is first peeled. The hard argan nut, which is six times harder than a hazelnut, is then split by women on a stone anvil, using a stone mallet.

The almond-shaped pit inside is sorted by hand. A Berber woman can extract approx. on kilogram of pits per day, this way. The pits are either immediately pressed or first carefully roasted and then pressed. The argan oil, which is extracted in this way, is cleaned of cloudiness using a filter. Therefore, from 30 kilograms of argan fruits, around 4.5 kilograms of argan pits are extracted and then finally, one litre of argan oil.

Morocco’s entire stock of argan trees has belonged to a “biosphere reserve” under the protection of UNESCO since 1998. Agricultural processing of the trees is strictly prohibited and all fruits grow 100% organically and are untreated. Our argan oil is exclusively extracted by hand and is constantly tested by a state food laboratory (analysis of roasted argan oil / analysis of cold-pressed argan oil ) for its excellent quality and absolute purity. For the benefit of the local Berber tribes, who live from extracting the argan oil and for the protection of the rare tree stocks, when buying, you should pay attention to the origin and quality of the argan oil.

From an ecological point of view, it is particularly important to also maintain the tree stocks in the future, as they prevent soil erosion and further expansion of the desert. Only truly pure argan oil is extracted using the traditional method. High-quality, pure argan oil therefore has its price.

Experts estimate that only 3-4 million litres of argan oil are extracted per year. In comparison with around 2.8 billion litres of olive oil, which are mechanically produced per year, this is a very modest yield and is another explanation for the price of this precious oil.
